Mel Bay First Lessons Banjo Music Book - Jack Hatfield

This book is designed to show the person with no musical experience how to play the five-string banjo in the popluar three-finger style. Many folks call this style Scruggs style after Earl Scruggs, the master musician who refined and popularized it. The three-finger style taught in this book is also known as bluegrass style, though many different styles of music can be played using these techniques. Book is used but in very good condition. CD is also included.

To use this method it is not required that you learn to read music, though the popular convention known as tablature is used to communicate all musical examples. Tablature, or Tab is a graphic representation that shows you what notes to play, what fingers to use and the duration of each note. Tab is used in virtually all banjo instruction manuals. It is very simple to learn. Most students understand the basic concept and can play music by looking at tab in just a few minutes.

This book will teach you the basic fundamentals of three-finger style and will give you a repertoire of several tunes that are instructive and fun to play. It is very important to listen to the accompanying recording repeatedly and to play along with it, especially if you are using this book as a self-instruction guide. On the recording, the rhythm instruments are isolated in the right channel. After you have learned a tune, you can adjust the balance control of your stereo to the right, eliminating the banjo so you can play along with the band. This is a more enjoyable way to practice, and it insures that you develop good rhythm. When you are ready to play with real live musicians, it will be much easier for you and for them, if you have already established good timing by practicing along with the recording.
